Why Study Biology?
Biology is the science of life, exploring everything from molecular mechanisms within cells to whole ecosystems. A Level Biology provides an essential foundation for degrees and careers in medicine, veterinary science, biotechnology, conservation, forensic science, and research.

The course is both modern and engaging with a comprehensive range of topics covered. Scientific enquiry and experimental design form a central part of the course, developing practical skills that complement any of the other Sciences studied.

Year 12

• Biological molecules 
• Cells types and cell structure
• Gas exchange in plants and animals
• Digestion and absorption of nutrients
• Gene structure and protein synthesis
• Mutations, meiosis, and genetic diversity

Year 13

• Bioenergetics (photosynthesis, respiration, and nutrient cycles)
• Response to the environment (plant and animal responses, human nervous system, muscles and movement)
• Mechanisms of inheritance
• Ecology and field investigations
• Mechanisms of gene expression and genetic technologies

Career Value:
The top seven degree courses taken by students who have an A Level in Biology are: Biology, Psychology, Sport and Exercise Science, Medicine, Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology, Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacy, Chemistry. Some students will also go on to study Veterinary Medicine, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Horticulture, Food Sciences, Biochemistry, Conservation and Environmental Science.

Guest lectures and away days will feature as a key part of the course. All Science students also participate in TKA's Science Symposium, which is an opportunity to research a topic of their choice and practice their presentation skills - with a chance to win a cash prize at the end.
