Biology

EXAM BOARD: AQA
COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 6 in Biology for separate Science or 6-6 in Trilogy (combined) Science

Why Study Biology?
Biology A Level provides a great foundation for further study in a wide range of STEM related subjects including medicine, forensic science, conservation and research. Students will gain an appreciation of human physiology, ecology, plant science, genetics as well as a broader understanding of communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Sample Course Content:
The course is both modern and engaging with a comprehensive range of topics covered.
The importance of scientific enquiry and experimental design will also form important aspects of the course. These skills will complement any of the other Sciences studied. Overview of the content:

Year 12

  • Biological molecules
  • Cells types and cell structure
  • Gas exchange in plants and animals
  • Digestion and absorption of nutrients
  • Gene structure and protein synthesis
  • Mutations, meiosis, and genetic diversity

Year 13

  • Bioenergetics (photosynthesis, respiration, and nutrient cycles)
  • Response to the environment (plant and animal responses, human nervous system, muscles and movement)
  • Mechanisms of inheritance
  • Ecology and field investigations
  • Mechanisms of gene expression
  • Genetic technologies

Career Value:
The top seven degree courses taken by students who have an A Level in Biology are: Biology, Psychology, Sport and Exercise Science, Medicine, Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology, Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacy, Chemistry. Some students will also go on to study Veterinary Medicine, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Horticulture, Food Sciences, Biochemistry, Conservation and Environmental Science.

Enrichment Opportunities:
Guest lectures and away days will feature as a key part of the course. All Science students also participate in TKA's Science Symposium, which is an opportunity to research a topic of their choice and practice their presentation skills - with a chance to win a cash prize at the end.
