Sophie Cavanagh

Trustee / Head Teacher

Sophie has over 20 years’ experience in the state Secondary education sector, working with some of the country’s highest performing schools and leadership teams.  She has a Masters in Education, achieved NPQH qualification on the fast-track path in 2010 and is a practicing OfSTED inspector.

She has been Head Teacher of The Kingston Academy since its inception in 2014 and understands that starting a school from scratch requires vision, energy, great communication and team skills and a total focus on what will really make the difference for children who attend her school. Her work in a deprived area of London for 14 years prior to becoming Head of TKA, developing collaborative practice amongst a network of primary and secondary schools, has reinforced her belief that schools are the agent for cementing community cohesion and enhancing social capital.

A keen reader, cook, mountaineer and golfer, Sophie’s enthusiasm and energy for life serve her well working in schools inspiring young people. Her ability to go beyond what schools ordinarily deliver, to take people with her and to always believe in the capacity of those around her, pupils, parents, staff and Trustees alike, is proving essential in delivering an aspirational and high achieving new secondary school for the North Kingston community.

Sophie and her young family live locally, in the community where she grew up and was educated.

Sophie states, about her role as Head Teacher of The Kingston Academy: “My ambition is to deliver an outstanding school that is an inclusive, harmonious community and a haven for learning and fun for our young people.”
