Ofsted Update

We are delighted to announce that TKA has just been rated ‘Outstanding’ and been awarded a Grade 1 by Ofsted inspectors in May 2018.

This is the first inspection for The Kingston Academy which opened its doors to pupils in September 2015. It is an amazing achievement for a new school in its third year of operation to gain Outstanding particularly across all four areas of the Ofsted framework.

The report stated: “Since opening the school in September 2015, leaders have quickly established an ambitious culture which demands excellence for all” that “Teaching successfully challenges all groups of pupils to aim high and achieve their best” and “The curriculum is rich and creative, which broadens pupils’ minds and helps them think critically”.

A team of inspectors, led by Her Majesty’s Inspector Sarah Parker, assessed the quality of teaching, learning and assessment, outcomes, behaviour, personal development and wellbeing and leadership and management in the school. Inspectors spent a significant amount of time with pupils, asking them about their experiences at the school.

The inspectors were impressed with the behaviour of pupils throughout the school, stating that: “Pupils are self-assured, polite and respectful” of their learning “Pupils’ progress is excellent because the quality of teaching, learning and assessment over time is exceptionally strong”.

Sophie Cavanagh, Headteacher of The Kingston Academy: “We are delighted with the outcome of our recent inspection. Our success is the result of a community of great people, especially our fantastic pupils who understand that hard work gets results. As a growing school, we still have much more to do. We look forward to an exciting future and to the challenge and opportunities that we will face along the way.”

KET, Chair of Trustees, Peter Mayhew-Smith: “We are so proud of our school, made wonderful by its Headteacher, its staff and its pupils. We have worked for years to achieve this kind of standard and it’s fantastic that Ofsted have recognised it so positively: we said we’d deliver an outstanding school for North Kingston and we did. The report is a delight to read and rightly so. We will go from here to create an institution that serves Kingston brilliantly for generations to come.”

Kingston University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steven Spier: “Kingston University is committed to helping young people of all ages get the very best out of their education, both through its outreach activities and key partnerships such as the Kingston Educational Trust, and regards this as an integral part of its role in enhancing learning right across the borough. The expertise of staff from across the University, along with Kingston College, has made a significant contribution to delivering an excellent learning experience for The Kingston Academy pupils, ensuring they have the opportunity to flourish and fulfil their potential.”

Robert Henderson, Director of Children’s Services at Kingston Council and Deputy Chief Executive of Achieving for Children, said: “We are committed to working with all our schools to ensure that children receive the best education and start in life. Congratulations to The Kingston Academy on this amazing achievement and well done to all the staff for working hard to create a good learning environment.”
